Hungarian Educational Research Association

History

The Hungarian Educational Research Association (HERA, first founded in 1989) held its inaugural meeting in September 2011. It has been registered at the Budapest Court on 12 March 2012, as a non-profit organization. HERA is a Hungarian member organization of EERA (European Educational Research Association). Its main goal is to bring together the Hungarian speaking education researchers. Further goals are

to ensure professional participation in the domestic and international scientific communities;
conduct and support national and international research on education,
provide a forum for the exchange of views among education researchers.

HERA does not engage in party politics.

Size

HERA has 545 members (as at 31 December 2021) in 13 member organisations and 18 departments (31 December 2020).

Mode of Operating

HERA operates following the Hungarian Civil Law (CLXXV of 2011 and LXXVI of 2017).

The members of HERA create the General Assembly, the highest legislative body. It meets annually in the framework of the Hungarian Conference of Educational Researchers (HuCER).
The Presidency is a three-member decision-making body (president and two vice-presidents) elected by HERA members for three years and making decisions between two general assemblies. The enlarged Presidency involves the International Coordinator, the Secretary-General and the Organizing Secretary.
The HERA’s Advisory Board comprises the leaders of member organisations and departments. The Advisory Body and holds its meetings monthly.

Activities

Conferences and workshops

HERA’s Annual Conference is HuCER (see above). The idea for the HuCER series came from ECER, EERA’s annual European Conference on Educational Research. HuCER is the domestic version of ECER, linked to HERA’s General Assembly (see above).
Arranging workshops. Between two HuCER conferences, HERA’s member organisations and departments continuously organise research activities (workshops, open discussions, book presentations etc.). These may be related to new research findings, science policy issues or major educational policy decisions.
Supporting participation in ECER conferences (see above). HERA encourages and prepares its members for ECER conferences and, where possible, supports their participation and contacts in the EERA networks.

Awards

In parallel with the launch of the HuCER conference, the HERA awards were established:

Báthory Award, HERA’s highest recognition for scholars who have reached their careers’ peak and are school founding personalities.
HERA-ért (for HERA, Hungarian), an award given to those who, with their dedication and perseverance, supported the organisation’s annual work and set an example of this membership.
The ‘Best Publication’ award is given annually for emerging researchers.
The ‘Most Reed Publication’ award is handed over from 2012 onwards to the author(s) of the most clicked publication.

Publications

HERA organises/publishes the following publications (individually or in partnership):

HERJ (Hungarian Educational Research Journal) is the international journal of HERA (, https://akjournals.com/view/journals/063/063-overview.xml) Akadémiai Publishing, Budapest. The journal is peer-reviewed, publishes academic and scientific writings and is registered in Hungarian and international databases. So far, ten volumes (each of four issues) have been published. (31 December 2020).
HERA Yearbook, a selected and revised collection of lectures given at the HuCER conferences. Seven volumes have been published so far (31 December 2020).
‘Education and Society’, a book series in Hungarian, for social studies on education, published by Gondolat Publishing House in Budapest. 24 volumes have been published so far (31 December 2020).
